In the midst of the elephants, acrobats and tigers is a singer with a voice big enough to preside over what’s billed as “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

“Being at Ringling Bros., this is America’s longest-running hit show, it’s an American icon, and being the voice of that is a humbling experience when you consider the fact that my co-workers can fly, they talk to animals, the animals themselves have so much to teach,” said Johnathan Lee Iverson, ringmaster of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus.

(Story continued below…)

When the circus comes back to town next week with a new show, Iverson will be at the center of all the spectacle. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents “Legends” will play Thursday through June 28 at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

“It’s throwing everything out there. We’ve gone mythological, we’ve gone prehistoric, we’ve put together and assembled the most exceptional talents on the face of the Earth, from Alexander Lacey all the way from Great Britain, with his talented lions and tigers; there’s our 4-foot dynamo Paulo dos Santos all the way from Brazil — he is an extraordinary athlete, acrobat, martial artist, and he kind of does everything wonderfully. We have for the first time the China National Acrobatic Troupe. Of course, we have our world famous Clown Alley and the first family of daring. They are the Torres Family and their globe of steel; they’ll go almost eight bikes inside the globe of steel. It’s never been done before,” Iverson said from the road in New Orleans.

Commanding attention

The New York native knows about doing what’s never been done before: When he joined the circus in 1998, he was the first black ringmaster in Ringling Bros.’ long and storied history.

Iverson, who began performing at age 11 with the world-famous Boys Choir of Harlem, donned the iconic top hat shortly after he graduated from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School with a degree in voice performance.

“I went to school to be an opera singer, and it’s one of these things where, of course, it’s wonderful to actually make a living at what you want to do. I mean it’s great. You go through the struggles of having the dream, figuring out your place, and it’s so funny, people go, ‘What are you going to do with a degree in do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do?’ and ‘You know that’s not gonna be a real job’ and ‘Oh, think of the competition,’ so on and so forth — like they would know — but you just have to believe and you really have to be daring enough to be what you want to be. And the doors will open,” he said.

“Fortunately, a wonderful door opened that I never even perceived before, and it’s a wonderful thing that I get to use my talent in this way, and again, it’s very humbling. If anybody noticed me in this kind of melee, that’s pretty good. You know, once an 8,000-pound elephant comes up, you’re basically overshadowed; I don’t care who you are. So, it’s fun to be a part of that.”

‘Sawdust mafia’

But the ringmaster commanded enough attention that Barbara Walters named him one of her 10 most fascinating people of 1999. After six years and three consecutive tours with Ringling Bros., Iverson left to perform in several off-Broadway productions, act in commercials and do voiceover work on the animated film “Eloise.”

“But it’s the sawdust mafia, you never really get out, so I was always doing work with the show even when I wasn’t on the road,” Iverson said. “Once you go circus, you don’t go back, and that’s really what it is. It becomes a part of you, and really there’s nothing else you’re going to do that’s going to come close to that type of thrill because it’s a life. It’s not just going to work performing, it’s a life. You are interacting with people every day, you’re interacting with so many different types of people. You’ll make bonds with people who, quite frankly, you wouldn’t have given the time of day outside of this place, that will become lifelong bonds. That’s the power of circus life, and it’s not just here at Ringling Bros., it’s everywhere, in every circus.”

He spends his circus life with his wife, Priscilla, a former dance captain who is now the show’s production manager, and their two children, Matthew Felipe, 10, and Lila Simone, 6, who attend school on the road with the other children.

“They’re just like a lot of other kids only their parents are in the circus … and they study acrobatics with actual acrobats,” Iverson said. “We see a great deal of the country and we get to take in a lot of sights. … That’s completely up to my wife. If it was up to me I’d be laying in the bed reading a book, so most of the time we do.”

Mythical menagerie

He slipped back into the colorful ringmaster’s jacket with tails in 2009 and  continues his reign with Ringling Bros.’ 144th edition, “Legends.”

“As I said, we brought in the mythological, so that myth may not be a myth anymore: We have a Pegasus and a unicorn and we found ourselves a wooly mammoth,” he said. “So, there’s new additions to our menagerie of world-famous animals — elephants, lions, tigers, rescue dogs, horses, ponies, lamas, you name it — and we’ve also brought in kangaroos now and we have prancing pigs.”

He said many fans are flocking to the new show to see Ringling Bros. famous elephants, since the circus announced earlier this year that its last 13 performing pachyderms will retire by 2018.

“We see their genius in every performance and in just their everyday behavior, and it’s a beautiful thing to see. I’m not an animal person at all; I’m from New York City. The most exotic thing I ever saw growing up was a squirrel, but you can really see there’s a bond, a connection, there’s something of value when you see these animals and you see the camaraderie they have with their trainers,” he said.

“People are really realizing … how much these elephants have meant to their lives. Many have grown up at circuses seeing these elephants, and it’s been a wonderful, wonderful thing to see people really respond as they have.”

Johnathan Lee Iverson: The Voice of a Legend

By: Lisa Kinchen and Careshia Moore

Standing at six feet five inches tall with a presence that is larger than life and a voice that matches his stature, Johnathan Lee Iverson is one of the most fascinating people in the entertainment industry. As a Ringmaster for the Greatest Show on Earth, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Iverson has become a legend in his own right. Iverson’s journey to legendary status began in New York City when he was 11-years old and a member of the world-famous Boys Choir of Harlem where he toured with this prestigious choir sharing his gift with the world. During his eight years with the Choir, Iverson learned the foundations of performance and honed his craft that contributes to his fame today.

Alexander LaceyAt the age of 13, Iverson had the pleasure of hearing world renowned-opera singer Placido Domingo sing on the stage. Standing spellbound at his performance, a young Iverson knew that he would spend the rest of his life performing as an opera singer on stages the world over. Despite many attempts by loved ones to pursue what was perceived as more stable or certain career paths, Iverson continued his pursuit.

Following high school, Iverson went on to graduate from University of Hartford Hartt School of Music with a degree in voice performance. While auditioning for a dinner theater and after a series of serendipitous events, Iverson earned the coveted title as Ringmaster with the Greatest Show on Earth. This role would place him in the history books as the first African-American and youngest ringmaster in the 145-year history of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. At the age of 22, Iverson experienced a unique situation that aligned with his dreams and goals of becoming a performer.

As the Ringmaster, Iverson presides over the cast of the circus as they entertain audiences all over the United States. Beginning in 1998, he was the voice of Ringling Brothers and garnered much attention. He was even blessed to capture a spot in Barbara Walters’ Ten Most Fascinating People special in 1999, just one year after touring with the show. After touring with the show and experiencing the time of his life for six consecutive years, Iverson has performed on several other editions of the show.

Iverson’s performance career has included performing in several off-Broadway productions, commercials, special events, voiceovers and even journalism. This multi-talented figure has dazzled audiences in many capacities and enjoys every minute of it. He attributes his success to his strong upbringing and to never giving up on his dreams to become a performer. Despite caring adults in his life who tried to persuade him to pursue a more “stable” career, Iverson continued on with his passion and ultimately his purpose in life.

Undoubtedly, Iverson’s talent has afforded him longevity in his career that is unprecedented. His accomplishments are significant and have placed him in a category of legendary performers. His status was recently recognized as he was asked to continue as Ringmaster for the 144th edition of Ringling, LEGENDS. The show features awesome performers from around the world and introduces the audiences to mythical and legendary creatures of the past: a Unicorn, a Pegasus and a Wooly Mammoth.

Iverson views his job as one who brings mirth, fun and joy to audiences. His love for the circus is apparent, and he touts an amazing work ethic. He values the imagination of the audience and appreciates the space the show creates for spectators to escape from the hustle and bustle of life.

RBBB Trapeze

The circus also brought love to Iverson as he met his wife Priscilla, a former performer and currently the show’s production manager, while performing. Together they have two children who have the opportunity to travel with their parents during the show. They travel on the circus train to each city on the longest privately owned train. Iverson loves that his children have the opportunity to experience life with the circus as it affords them the opportunity to see each city they visit and continuously experience the wonder and amazement of the circus.

“There are always going to be funny journeys you have to go through. And they are ongoing. When you have a passion you don’t retire. It’s your purpose. You do it until the day you die. If you feel it when you go to sleep and when you wake up, it’s your passion. Go the way your blood beats.”

While traveling, Iverson also has the opportunity to give back and impact the communities that support the Show. Recently, during the Atlanta dates, Iverson took the time to speak to a group of students who participate in Usher’s New Look, Usher Raymond’s youth leadership program. Iverson encouraged the young, talented students to pursue their passions as he did. This walking success story had a huge impact on the youth as he left them with truthful words that resonate with young aspiring leaders. “There are always going to be funny journeys you have to go through. And they are ongoing. When you have a passion you don’t retire. It’s your purpose. You do it until the day you die. If you feel it when you go to sleep and when you wake up, it’s your passion. Go the way your blood beats,” Iverson shared.

With the “sawdust running through his veins” and with enough talent to fill a circus tent, Iverson proudly proclaims his love and appreciation for the “Greatest Show on Earth”. “I will stay around for as long as they will have me.”

I’ve heard it said, “The bitterness of defeat, can be far greater than the joys of victory.” Tens of millions were riveted by the events of Super Bowl 49, as two of the leagues very best teams, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks put on a grand display of athletic excellence, only to see their fates determined by 1-yard.

New England and their fans will revel in the spoils and ease that come with a victory that was fought and realized to the last yard. All the while the Seattle Seahawks will be left to ponder and stew in the disappointment of knowing they have no one to blame but themselves, for what should have been a sure victory.

An entire season, countless hours of training, bruised bodies, weeks spent away from the ones you love, and a whole host of sacrifices made – all determined by one yard. Super Bowl 49 was a vivid reminder of the fact that life is indeed, a series of choices and those dreams we work, pray, sacrifice, and scheme so hard for never rest. They require our full attention and engagement. They must be seen all the way through; or we risk finding ourselves groveling in the wake of regret, clinging to what should of, could of, would have been for want of a few wise decisions.

For there are few pains in life, that sting greater than a dream deferred, by our own hand. Conversely, few joys are sweeter than seeing and experiencing the efforts of ones dream through, to the very last yard.

Recently, I met a young musician who so happen to be a student of a fellow Hartt School of Music alumnus and friend. I hadn’t seen my friend for nearly 15 years, so I was giddy about seeing and performing for her, as she is an accomplished musician in her own right. The young man of nineteen was very cordial, but I couldn’t help but notice how reserved he was. Actually, he seemed more contained, as if he would have loved to express something yet was unsure, thus it was better not to say anything at all and just behave cordially. I’d picked up on this after exhcanging some social niceties. Perhaps it was the post show euphoria of seeing my old college mate and her expressing her ecstatic approval of what she’d just witnessed, that prompted me to break into Motivational Speaker mode.

My wonderful friend had spoken so highly of her charge and how much she believed in him and his talent. So naturally I inundated him with questions about his aspirations. Sure it’s a bit unfair as none of us at that age really know, but if your dreams are valid you have an idea. My new young musician friend seemed rather unsteady regarding his ambitions and it showed in his replies to me. He even seemed to down play himself, which I absolutely do not tolerate. The world in which you live, especially if you are going to endeavor in anything remotely related to the entertainment industry will give you more than enough reasons to doubt, settle and forget you had any dreams to begin with. If anything, you must be your biggest fan. You must be convinced that your dreams, your ambitions, that which James Baldwin mused, “makes your blood beat,” is valid. I dared the young man to make it a habit, even a daily ritual to affirm himself. I personally see in him a star in the making, for which he half heartedly professed to not having such desires, which is fine. But, I knew he wasn’t being honest with himself when he tried to sell me the notion that he essentially just wanted to be a perpetual student, maybe a professor. I saw the lightening flash. I reminded my new young friend that as a musician you will always be a student, furthermore, don’t do us any favors by becoming a professor if this is not your actual vocation, but rather your escape. It’s insulting to the profession, an honorable and vital one, it’s insulting to the students you’ll inevitably ruin and it is insulting to yourself. There’s no joy in living beneath yourself and only cowards seek refuge from the best of themselves. I concede, for a first meeting with someone I have no familiarity with this was a bit much. However, for his part he seemed to get where I was coming from and certainly knew it was anchored in love.

When the very beautiful and amazingly talented, Lupita Nyong’o accpeted her Best Supporting Actress accolade for 12 Years A Slave at the 86th Annual Academy Awards, during her acceptance speech she delivered in my estimation the line of the evening: “…your dreams are valid.” Hollywood is not known for celebrating artists like Ms. Nyong’o. Western society as a whole has never been very fond of celebrating her likes. So one can only imagine when, as P.T. Barnum would say, her “peculiar genius” began to stir within, the daunting task of convincing herself admist that thick fog of doubt, even fear, the condescensions, the patronizing, the rejections, others’ vision of her, “…your dreams are valid.” It’s an experience not uncommon to those of us who dare to tread that road, often lonely road toward our true ambitions. But, it starts with audacity, even pride, and you must be careful to make the distinction between pride and arrogance. Arrogance is an unrealistic and ignorant understanding of oneself. Pride, carefully managed convinces us to endure and drives us to excellence. Thus, the first step upon this journey must be a sure, steady and honest one. “For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed” (James 1:6). Those who shift to and fro are those who’ve never believed in the validity of their ambitions and essentially the validity of themselves. Your dreams are as valid as you make them. They’re as real and as lively as you believe them to be, but you must believe them, and in believing them you narrow the possibility of doubt. You narrow the possibility of shifting with every fleeting distraction, because you are grounded in the validation of your possibilities.

It’s Your Dream, It’s Your Voice, Make it Big!
