The New Testament tells the story of a woman caught in adultery being brought to Jesus by a band of self-righteous men, to see what the popular Rabbi would do. His reply would not only convict these “good men” but, resonate for generations to come. “He who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Anyone, like myself, who lacks the will not to turn on the television or get online is well aware of the latest scandals captivating the public’s imagination, particularly in the world of sports. I will say here and now that abuse of any sort cannot be brushed aside and taken lightly, be it a public figure or just your average Joe. The manner in which we handle such things as a society must be consistent for everyone, male or female, rich or poor. There is no excuse for anyone to lift their hand, foot, expel saliva, etc., at another human being, particularly one for whom you claim to love above all others. These are serious matters and from the varied outrage that it has evoked, it is clear that our society as a whole, be it the judicial system, a sports league or our homes, has yet to address the matter adequately.

However, so many of us have the habit of puffing our chest and wagging our fingers in disgust and condemnation when it comes to the ill revelations revealed about the character or actions of others, particularly those who don’t have the luxury of living their every breathing moment away from flashing lights and prying so-called news outlets. It’s rather audacious how easily we forget our own sins. Sure, you might say, “well at least I didn’t do that…” Interesting, Jesus didn’t ask, “he who never committed adultery cast the first stone?” You may very well not have done what others have, but, sin is sin and I assure you, you are just as capable. Never, ever underestimate the depths of your wretchedness.

Yes, call for accountability and pursue justice, by all means, comfort the victimized, but beware of exalting yourself in the process. Are you not made of the same stuff as the perpetrator?
